Tweet, Blog or PhD Thesis? Tweet, blog ou thèse doctoral ?

Tweets are limited to 140 characters, meaning in these first two sentences we will have already gone far beyond the realm of a single tweet. Such brevity would seem useful for announcing upcoming or recent events, but questionable for going into thoughtful analysis.

I have read that blog entries in general should not surpass 500 words.

A PhD thesis in the humanities at the Sorbonne is to be 300 pages at least, with recent government pressure for this to be completed within three years, and not the seven or eight year average to date.

Karen O'Rourke noted in Walking as Mapping, (2013) how in this age of blogs and the like, there is somewhat of a phenomenon where everyone is talking, but less are listening. The proportion of those who have something to say, whether it be by writing, painting, or by other means seems to far outweigh the availability of people to delve into these works as an audience.

In the case of a tweet or blog, actual readership could vary from zero to into the millions.

Tweets tend to be read rather quickly or not at all. Blogs can be read immediately or years later. PhD theses are read in entirety only after years of work, by the members PhD jury, who possibly skim, and perhaps some later researchers, though, to be fair, most often some of the thesis content is also shared more broadly during shorter professional articles and conferences. It is notable now, though, that PhDs are to be submitted in digital form, presumably making them, eventually, as accessible as blogs.

Maurice Benayoun combined blogging and PhD work when he submitted his blog The Dump*, about a collection of unfinished art projects, as a thesis at the Sorbonne in 2008.

How can abandon and holding can be perceived within these three forms of writing. Tweeting would, at first glance, seem to involve more of a movement of abandon. A thought quickly emerges and is sent out. Once sent cannot be modified. It is, however, also a marketing tool and is undoubtedly studied as such; tweets sometimes carefully crafted relative to marketing goals, which certainly falls within the realm of holding. Even in the case of more spontaneous tweets, such as those by pop stars, it is also a way to hold, to maintain the attention of one's fan-base.

Blogs, at the moment, would seem to be a middle path**. One can spend minutes (abandon) or hours (holding) crafting a 20-500 word blog entry, and go back and change it (holding). It may be read relatively quickly or years later (holding). One does, however, make the choice to share thoughts on an open forum, with all the benefits and risks that may involve. I would be inclined go further into analysis of these benefits and risks, relative to abandon and holding, but I have come to the end of the recommended 500 words so will save those thoughts for another entry or context.

Selon les xx les entrés de bloque ne devrait pas dépasser les 500 mots, sauf exceptionnellement.

Une thèse dans les sciences sociales au Panthéon-Sorbonne est sensé être 300 pages. Les dernières consignes de l'état indiquent que ceci doit être complété dans trois ans, en non pas les sept ou huit ans en moyen jusqu'à récemment.

La tweet est souvent rapidement lu, ou pas du tout. Le blog peut être lu de suite ou des années plus tard. Le thèse sont entièrement lues seulement après des années de travail, par les membres du jury, qui lisent parfois peut être en diagonal, et ensuite, peut être par quelques autres chercheurs. Toutefois, le plus souvent, le contenu des portions de la thèse sont également partagé plus largement lors de l'écriture d'articles et intervention en colloque. On peut noter que désormais, les thèse sont déposé sous forme numérique, ce qui les rendrait, éventuellement, aussi accessible que le sont des blogs.

Ou se trouve l'abandon et le maintien dans ces trois formes d'écriture ? L

Le tweet serait, à première vu, plutôt un mouvement d'abandon. Une pensée émerge, et et vite envoyé. Une fois envoyé, cela ne peut plus se modifier. Il peut être, cependant, également un instrument de marketing et est étudié sous cet angle. Certains tweets sont méticuleusement travaillés afin d'atteindre des objectifs de commercialisation ; ce qui tombe dans la domaine de maintien. Même dans le cas des tweets spontané des pop star, ils sont une manière de garder, de maintenir l'attention de ses fans.

Blogs, en ce moment, semblerait être une voie du milieu **. L'on pourrait passer quelques minutes (abandon) ou des heures (maintien) en travaillant une entré de blog de 20-500 mots, et revenir et le modifier (maintien). L'on peut le lire rapidement, ou des années plus tard (maintien). L'on fait le choix, pourtant, de partager ses pensées dans un discussion ouverte, avec tous les intérêts et risques que cela pourrait signifier. Je serait encline à developer davantage ces intérêts et ces risques, sous l'angle de l'abandon et le maintien, mais je suis arrivée au bout des 500 mots forum ouvert conseillés, alors je mettra ce sujet à coté, pour l'examiner plus tard, lors d'une autre entré ou contexte.
